Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
