The alleged killer of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk appeared to claim responsibility for the shooting on the messaging platform the chat app, a company spokesperson has verified.

According to the spokesperson, the 22-year-old suspect contacted friends in a chat on the platform a short time before he was taken into custody last week in connection with the attack on Kirk at an event at Utah Valley University.

"I was the one at UVU yesterday. im sorry for all of this," states a communication from an account that allegedly is linked to the accused, based on the representative and a law enforcement source.

Mr Robinson, who has not yet been formally charged, is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

Taken into custody on allegations of homicide, illegal use of a weapon and interfering with the investigation, he could face the capital punishment.

The Discord messages said to be from Mr Robinson, first reported by the a major newspaper, are thought to have been composed and shared near the conclusion of a search for the perpetrator that lasted more than a day.

Kirk, 31, who was a polarizing personality in American political circles and a close supporter of former President Trump, was speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday at an outdoor gathering organized by a conservative group - the entity he helped establish - when he was struck in the neck by a single bullet.

The killing of the well-known online influencer provoked outrage, with Democrats and Republicans blaming each other of promoting divisive language, and a search for his killer.

Law enforcement sources have stated that the suspect and his associates bantered about the shooting prior to his apprehension in a online discussion on the platform involving over 20 people.

The company representative said that an company review had found "nothing to suggest that the accused planned this incident or encouraged harm on Discord".

The individual is reportedly asked by friends about whether he was the gunman, which he did not appear to reject, and there were also comments from one member about him staying away from McDonald's.

Messages from the profile thought to belong to Mr Robinson also suggest that he was planning to hand himself in.

"I am turning myself in through a law enforcement contact in a few moments, thank you for the memories and laughs, you've all been so amazing, thank you all for all your support," states a message.

It was reported that Mr Robinson was refusing to collaborate with officials but his roommate was among those who were.

Authorities have been trying to establish a motive for the shooting.

Public records examined suggest that the suspect had in the past registered as an nonpartisan elector.

Nevertheless, according to sources, a relative told investigators that he had become "increasingly ideological" in recent years and had brought up Kirk's impending visit during a dinner.

One of the former president’s key aides has alleged there was an organised campaign behind the assassination but nothing concrete has been provided so far that suggests Mr Robinson was acting as part of a group.

Law enforcement are also examining social media accounts associated with Mr Robinson, and any signs that others may have been aware of or supported the shooting beforehand.

Vigil for Charlie Kirk News Agencies
Vigils have been held in the US and in other countries in honor of Charlie Kirk

Kirk, a religious individual, was a advocate of firearm ownership, strongly against termination, was skeptical about transgender and gay rights, and promoted misinformation about Covid-19.

Those who admired him said he was relatable, empathized with their concerns and was able to hold respectful conversations with those he held opposing views to.

However, his opinions drew strong opposition from progressives, with his detractors calling his comments highly disrespectful to some communities, including LGBT people and Muslims.

Turning Point USA, which Kirk co-founded, aimed to spread right-leaning values at progressive US colleges, and played a key role in getting people to support Trump and other GOP contenders in the vote last year.
