Kenya Seeks Detention Order for Ex- British Serviceman in Alleged Killing of Agnes Wanjiru

A detention order was granted for a British national accused of the murder of Kenyan female Agnes Wanjiru, whose body was discovered in 2012 on the grounds of a hotel close to a military base.

Legal Action and Transfer Application

Presiding justice Alexander Muteti issued the warrant this week, with state lawyers confirming that a suspect had been officially accused with murder and that extradition steps would be initiated.

Testifiers based in the United Kingdom are expected to testify during the trial, according to the prosecution. “Those individuals are abroad but we will ensure their presence,” the judge heard.

Details of the Case

The victim, twenty-one, was last seen with UK troops on the night of 31 March 2012 at the Lion’s Court hotel in her hometown.

She disappeared that evening, and months later her remains was discovered concealed in a waste container at the hotel.

The deceased worked as a hairdresser and at times engaged in sex work to earn extra money. She left behind a child, her young girl, who was an infant at the moment of her parent’s death.

Relative’s Response and Judicial Process

“Our family has endured with the anguish of Agnes’s death for over a decade,” the relatives stated. “The reports that an arrest warrant has been granted is a significant moment for us.”

The family’s legal representative commented: “The family now urges the British government to do everything in its power to guarantee that the accused can be extradited and stands trial in Kenya as soon as possible.”

Should the individual is extradited, it would mark the first time a current or former British soldier has been transferred to a foreign nation to face trial for the killing of a non-combatant.

Probe and Past Examinations

So far, the case of Wanjiru has been the focus of multiple inquiries and numerous criminal investigations.

The bar at the establishment was a frequented location for UK troops stationed at the local military camp.

An individual was identified by several servicemen following a media report in 2021.

From that point, Kenyan detectives have allegedly visited the UK multiple times to interview soldiers and ex-soldiers who were in the area at the time of the incident.

Government Response

Earlier this year, the British official visited the relatives and promised full support for the investigation.

“It was profoundly moving to see the relatives of the victim,” the official said. “Over the long years since her passing, they have shown great resilience in their fight for accountability.”

Future Proceedings

No date has been set for the extradition hearing or future trial. The matter is set to be mentioned again in court on 21 October.
