New research suggests that people who come off new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals using these medications must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
